Oh, how quickly they forget. The Democrats are all, um, atwitter in laughing at Trump for claiming that the Obama Administration wiretapped him and Trump Towers. Whether that is accurate or not remains to be seen, and as President, he should be able to get the actual requests to FISA if indeed that IS true.
But what Democrats and the Media (pretty much the same) are ignoring or pretending didn’t happen are the very real instances in which the Obama Administration DID spy on journalists including James Rosen at Fox News and Sharyl Attkisson at CBS, as well as AP reporters (The Week has a good piece on the secret spying of AP Reporters by the Obama Administration).
Never mind that the NSA under Obama also spied on an American citizen in the United States, Gen. Mike Flynn during the course of his preparation to become the National Security Adviser. Let’s just dance on his grave and ignore altogether just HOW information about his (benign) conversations was even known. Nothing to see her, move along, move along…
What we do know, without a shadow of a doubt, is that the Obama Administration DID target journalists it considered dangerous to the Administration. James Rosen spoke about his experience this past weekend on Fox and Friends. Via Hot Air:
If you prefer to read the crux of Rosen’s comments, you can do so at Hot Air, but here is the salient part:
“I have to clarify that I was not wiretapped, my parents were not wiretapped, which is where you place a listening device on someone’s telephone line and you listen to their conversations,” Rosen said. He continued, “What happened to me was that the Attorney General, Eric Holder, under Barack Obama as president secretly designated me a criminal co-conspirator and a flight risk and thereby had a federal judge give the government permission to rifle through all my gmails.
“They could read the emails, and then also to get all the phone records associated with about 20 phones that I used at that time in my reporting. All of those phone lines were 202 or 703, which are the area codes associated with Washington and the Pentagon, northern Virginia area. One of those 20 phone lines was 718 and that referred to my parent’s house on Staten Island at that time.” […] (Click here to read the rest.)
Someone who had a great deal done to her as a result of her investigative nonpartisan journalism was Sharyl Attkisson. I have written before about her experiences, and they are CHILLING indeed, especially since she had the full weight of the federal Government breathing down her neck, erasing her work, and spying on her.
I cannot begin to do justice to Attkisson’s most recent piece on her battle with the Federal Government, but hopefully the following will give you a good idea of what she endured. From SharylAttkisson.com:
I have a separate federal lawsuit underway against the federal government over illegal surveillance of my work and home computers by intruders using software proprietary to a U.S. intelligence agency. The intrusions were detected and confirmed by three independent forensics exams in 2013.
So far, the government has not cooperated with my lawsuit. For example, without even filing the required motion, government officials failed to show up for a properly-noticed deposition in the case. Tab Turner is legal counsel on my behalf for this actions.
Gee, SHOCKING that the Obama Administration was uncooperative. Perhaps it is because of the extent of what the Government did to Attkisson:
On December, 27, 2014, Investigative Journalist Sharyl Attkisson filed administrative claims under the Federal Tort Claims Act against the U.S. Department of Justice, the U.S. Postal Service, and certain unnamed employees and/or agents of the federal government. Shortly thereafter, a lawsuit was filed in the District of Columbia alleging certain violations of Attkisson’s constitutional rights based on information implicating the federal government in illegal electronic monitoring and surveillance of her home and business computers and phones.
As outlined in the claims, three separate computer forensics exams revealed that intruders used sophisticated, remote capabilities to monitor Attkisson’s work. The intruders installed and periodically “refreshed” software used to exfiltrate data, obtain Attkisson’s passwords to various personal and work accounts, access the CBS News computer system, and monitor Attkisson’s audio using a Skype account. Forensics also revealed evidence of U.S. government-related involvement in the surveillance.
Through a Freedom of Information Act request, Attkisson learned that the F.B.I. opened a case on her computer intrusions in 2013, listing her as the victim, but the agency failed to interview her in the investigation or even notify her that one had been opened. To date, U.S. government officials have failed to fully cooperate with Attkisson’s efforts to learn about the intrustions, and have failed to full respond numerous requests to help provide information necessary to learn the truth. As a consequence of the government’s choice to ignore Attkisson’s requests, Attkisson and her family have chosen the only available option left to them. […] (Click here to read the rest.)
So yeah – it isn’t a real stretch to think that the Obama Administration, especially after expanding the NSA powers, decided to throw some wiretaps Trump’s way. They certainly had no qualms spying on American citizens BEFORE that, especially journalists.
What I don’t understand are all of the journalists/Democrats who were okay with that just because it was Obama doing it. All I can figure is this is what passes for “logic” with them:
