Comey’s Capitol Hill Testimony, And Lynch As Blocker For Clinton? *Open Thread*

FBI Director James Comey was on Capitol Hill this week to testify to the US Senate about a bunch of issues that have arisen under his “leadership.” One in particular was about his actions during the Election.

You may recall that Comey did a major flip-flop during the Election about Hillary Clinton and her emails. That decision led to all kinds of claims that he was influencing the election outcome. And not for nothing, his decision-making, especially about not charging Huma Abeddin for sharing classified emails with her husband, Anthony Weiner, raised some questions then and now.

Like how the hell Comey could justify NOT charging them even if what they did was out of ignorance. Hasn’t he ever heard that ignorance of the law is no excuse? That is precisely what Sen. Cruz made clear to Comey in his questioning of him. You can view that video at the Right Scoop. Comey’s response was suspect at best. Legal Insurrection also has a good piece on the Comey vs. Cruz segment if you wish to read/watch more.

There was more from the Comey hearing. The Hill has “Five Takeaways” to consider, beginning with this one:

1. Comey isn’t sorry

The FBI chief indicated he did not regret sending a letter to lawmakers 11 days before the Nov. 8 election revealing the bureau had found new evidence possibly related to its investigation involving Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.

GOP lawmakers immediately made the letter public, thrusting questions about Clinton’s use of a private email server while serving as secretary of State into the spotlight in the campaign’s final days.

Democrats have accused Comey of employing a double standard by publicly discussing the Clinton investigation while remaining silent about a separate probe underway into possible ties between Russia and then-GOP nominee Donald Trump.

Clinton on Tuesday directly blamed Comey’s letter for contributing to her loss, saying otherwise she was “on the way to winning.”

The FBI director said Wednesday he felt “mildly nauseous” at the notion the bureau’s conduct may have influenced the outcome of the election, but he insisted he “wouldn’t have done it any differently.”

Comey said that because he had already told lawmakers that the Clinton probe was complete, restarting the investigation in such a “hugely significant way” without alerting Congress would be “catastrophic.”

He was silent on the Trump investigation, he said, because at the time of the election, it was in its very early stages. The bureau opened that probe in July. […] (Click here to read the rest.)

hillary-resist-600a-liHoly moley. Well, there you have it. Comey, nauseous or not, doesn’t regret what he did one bit. Judging from what Clinton has been saying this week, that it was basically all Comey’s fauly she lost though she took responsibility for  losing (!!!!!), she’s not buying what he’s selling. Hell, even Judge Napolitano isn’t buyng Comey’s justification for revealing the investigation. It is a good excuse for Clinton, but her blame-shifting makes clear she won’t ever fully accept that she was a flawed candidate (Charles Krauthammer made an excellent observation about this). But hey – she’s part of the Resistance now, so “what difference at this point does it make??” Ahem.

Not to have buried the lead or anything, but there was one aspect of this hearing that Fox reporter Catherine Herridge said was THE main takeaway (and no, The Hill did not have this listed in its Top Five).  That would be this: an email from former AG Loretta Lynch essentially saying she was blocking to protect Hillary Clinton, around 1:35:

Holy SMOKES. And a h/t to the the Right Scoop for highlighting Herridge’s report. Here is more about that from the Right Scoop:

Fox News reporter Catherine Herridge says this is one of the biggest headlines out of the hearing today with the FBI director, pointing out that the FBI had found an email was obtained by Russian hackers that indicated that former DOJ hack Loretta Lynch would do everything she could to protect Hillary from prosecution…

Of course Comey wouldn’t reveal who sent the email and to whom it was sent. But it sounds like it was sent from someone who worked closely with Lynch, and sent to someone who was very worried about Clinton going down in flames, probably someone very close to Clinton… […](Click here to read the rest.)

Oh, boy. Well, that’s pretty big, isn’t it? When you have the Attorney General actively blocking for a candidate to protect her (or him) from prosecution is massive.

Of course, that wasn’t all of it. Below is a video of Rep. Trey Gowdy speaking with Bill Hemmer about Comey, Clinton, and Lynch. There is a statement by Comey that is telling indeed about Lynch and the OTHER Clinton, Bill:

Woo-EY, that was something, wasn’t it? Yeah, it will sure be interesting to see what, if anything, comes of all of these revelations regarding Lynch.

And while Rep. Gowdy is right that Comey was not the one who made Clinton, Abedin, Weiner, and Lynch do what they did, he IS responsible for how he handled everything related TO them, like allowing Abedin to get away with sending classified materials to her husband.

And for not going after Lynch in a big way NOW for what she did. Her behavior was appalling for an Attorney General of the United States. She should have been completely non-partisan in the Election, not run interference for Hillary Clinton. That we had to find that out courtesy of a RUSSIAN HACKER says a whole lot too, and none of it good.

I reckon Obama did “change” the country, and his choice of Attorneys General are a glaring case in point. Let’s hope that at least one of them, Lynch, will get her comeuppance for her very partisan behavior. Hey, a girl can hope!

This is an Open Thread. Feel free to talk about any of the above, or whatever else is on your minds today.

Important post Rev,given that the left is ready to “lynch” Comey.

Clinton herself says she takes full responsibility for her loss while listing Comey, Russia and Wikileaks as responsible. Maybe she never saw “The Princess Bride” and doesn’t know that “full responsibility” doesn’t mean what she thinks it means.

I don’t like Comey and I don’t trust him. I think the FBI needs an honest lawman who can still navigate politics. Comey strikes me as more politician than lawman. And I don’t trust politicians. And I don’t want them in charge of law enforcement.

Holder and Lynch are perfect examples of the President they served. Dishonest and agenda driven.

Does Jeff Sessions provide an example of Trump’s thinking? I would hope so but find it doubtful.

I don’t believe Donald Trump is stupid. But I do believe he’s an ignorant man with a big mouth and a propensity for seeing everything in the world as it relates to him. That’s dangerous – and very Obama like IMO.

      Thanks so much, Marge.

I agree with your assessment of Comey. That he doesn’t seem to grasp a concept taught to first year law students as well as a common refrain that ignorance of the law means nothing when you break the law, speaks VOLUMES abt him. He does seem like more of a politician than lawman, and I think the FBI has suffered for it. It has become more political, too, which it should NEVER be.

      Great comment!

      OHMYGOD – that is perfect!!

Isn’t it? And I think the cartoon you used in your post, beat me to the punch, shows a desperation on Clinton’s part to remain relevant.

She is part of the “Resistance” and thus a part of ANTIFA? Not a good idea and one I suspect will come back to bite her.

        • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

It is just absurd this whole “Resistance” movement to a LEGALLY elected US President. The Democrats continue to show how unbelievably unDemocratic they are, which is why I left them in the first place. They aren’t rebels – they are anarchists.

And no kidding abt Clinton!! Glad you liked the cartoon!

Mollie Hemingway: Trump’s Tweets Don’t Excuse Media Ignoring Obama Surveillance Story

Because President Trump made incendiary and unsubstantiated claims about wiretapping that he’s been unable to prove, the media have interpreted this, for some reason, as an excuse to pretend that there is nothing at all whatsoever to claims that the Obama administration spied on members of the Trump campaign and the incoming administration.

That question — of surveillance of Trump and associates by intelligence agencies — is a separate question from whether President Obama snuck into Trump Tower one night on hands and knees to personally lay down some taps on Trump’s phone lines.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

EXACTLY!! That is EXACTLY right! Hemingway is spot on, as usual.

Speaking of the media, here is Sharyl Attkisson’s report on the media in the First 100 Days:

Thanks for this Rev – I missed it and I respect her coverage as no other.

I also wonder about the “question” asked about the media.

I would have asked not if they were angry at the media, but if they trusted the media. I suspect it would have been more than 50-50 in lack of trust.

        • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

My pleasure, Marge. She really is one of a kind in the journalism world, isn’t she?

You are SO right – THAT is the question that should have been asked. I have no doubt that divide would be marked…

FAKE NEWS: No, The Republican Health Care Bill Didn’t Just Make Rape A Pre-Existing Condition

    By Ben Shapiro

“In Trump’s America, Rape Is a Preexisting Condition.”

“Under The New Health Care Bill, Rape Could Be A Pre-Existing Condition.”

“Trump’s Health Care Bill Allows Rape To Be A Pre-Existing Condition.”

“Rape And Domestic Violence Could Be Pre-Existing Conditions.”

These are all real headlines from mainstream media outlets: New York Magazine, Huffington Post, The Independent (UK), CNN.

The leftist case here is idiotic. Events are not “pre-existing conditions.” Injuries that occur as a result of events, if they occur before you attempt to buy insurance, are definitionally pre-existing conditions. Duh.

But the debate has now been so skewed that we think the government can magically have health insurance cover rape – which doesn’t even make sense. If no injury occurred requiring medical attention due to a rape, what would the insurance company do to cover it? Pray? Hunt down rapists?

Just when you think they’ve gone as low as they can go…

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Good. LORD. WTH is wrong with people??? They are ginning up SO much animosity just to push their ideological bent. This is appalling.

Great post Cuz! Thanks! It’s about time Lynch’s name came up.
    She needs some serious punishments!!!

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

      Thanks so much, Cuz’n!

And you are so right – she truly does. Holder does too, especially for his roll in Fast and Furious. That likely won’t happen, but maybe it isn’t too late for Lynch. We can hope, anyway…

Tim Tebow to Release New Book For Homeschoolers, After Winning Major Literary Award

In between shagging fly balls for the New York Mets minor league affiliate and lending his voice to college football coverage on ESPN and the SEC Network, Tim Tebow has found time to write his third book, Know Who You Are, Live Like It Matters: A Homeschooler’s Interactive Guide to Discovering Your True Identity, while winning a major book award.

A wonderful, multi-talented man who has been persecuted in the USA for being an unabashed Christian. I could not have believed this 20 years ago.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Thank you, Marge. I have nieces who homeschool their children, and who are Christians. I am going to share this with them and our Project Manager who also homeschools his kids. Excellent!

And you are right. Tebow was most definitely persecuted for his faith. He had much more success on the gridiron than his detractors would admit, and was far better than some mediocre quarterbacks who have made a career of it (e.g., Jay Cutler). He was never given the chance others have gotten of time to develop in the NFL. I have no doubt it was because he was outspokenly pro-life and Christian.

This is shocking. Absolutely shocking. The major networks and CNN are acting in contravention to the First Amendment and ignoring that the airwaves for the big 3 networks are OUR airwaves, not their’s. I cannot IMAGINE they would ever have done this to Obama:

    • kenoshamarge Says:

It is shocking and is it disgusting. This kind of behavior is exactly why I find myself so often defending the ignorant loud mouth in the White House. If he does nothing else in his term other than expose the media for the totalitarian leftists that they are he will have served this country well.

Oh God: Clinton To Launch New Super PAC To Help 2018 Candidates, Organizations Opposed To Trump

Hillary Clinton is out of the bunker and now part of the resistance. This was inevitable. Clinton lost the 2016 election, she just cannot move on from it, and now will continue to try and influence Democratic politics even though many just want her to go away.

Regardless, now that she’s out of the woods, Clinton will be eliciting the help of her former chief development officer at the Clinton Foundation to find donors for her new super PAC that will start out helping organizations fighting the Trump agenda. Eventually it will put to work to assist candidates for the 2018 midterms. The PAC will be called Onward Together.
