Single Payer Savior? *Open Thread*

That is what Democrats are now claiming in response to the Republicans’ attempts to deal with the monstrosity that is Obamacare, which just lost yet another insurer, Aetna  (h/t Sen. Scott for the link). Never mind that Obamacare has demonstrated – repeatedly – what a bad idea it is for the government to have a hand in any way in our health care, this is the new rally cry: Single payer healthcare for all! It is our RIGHT! We deserve it! We demand it!

I m not being hyperbolic, though I wish I was. Check out this current meme going around on Facebook:

Top 10 Reasons

Doesn’t that all look just awesome? Isn’t it all so rainbow-y and unicorn-y? Notice they fail to mention WHO WILL BE PAYING FOR THIS, or this rather important aspect of the whole single payer thing: The U.S. Government would be overseeing your healthcare.

Yes, rather than take the US Government out of health care as much as it is involved now, the Left now claims that health care must be the SOLE purview of the US government.

Let that sink in for just a minute. The same institution that has run Veterans Affairs SO poorly, costing the lives of veterans with its lack of timely care, is going to be the entity to oversee our HEALTH care?? Are you serious with that?

I shared this with a friend, and she had some excellent comments to make about this (idiotic) Top 10 List:

#3 doesn’t fly. On a government system, care will be rationed and seniors and the chronically ill, whose care costs more, will receive rationed care. And, the wealthy will always be able to afford out of pocket for private concierge medical care. The rest of us will get Medicaid.

#4 doesn’t fly, either. Enhance prevention? By whom? If the government is involved in “prevention” they’ll be intruding into every aspect of your life and determining if your lifestyle is appropriate or not.

The VA is the perfect example of a government run single payer health care system. Veterans dying in the waiting room. Dying at home waiting for appointments.
Anyone who thinks government run single payer is a good thing hasn’t been paying attention to Canada and the UK. Or the VA. Or Medicaid (Medi-Cal here in CA).
Oh, and I might add, while I’m ranting, that this was the plan by Obama et al from the beginning. Not that the Obamas or the Dems in Congress will ever be subjected to single payer.
One more thing that Ben Shapiro often says. His wife is a doctor and he has said that if healthcare is a right provided by the government and not a privilege that one must earn and pay for themselves, then that means that anyone who wants the services of his wife can demand them at any time whether or not they can pay. And that, he says, is servitude. As in slavery. (Shapiro wrote about this in National Review.)
Well said, friend! And I agree. I think this was the plan of the Democrats all along – to make Single Payer “health care” the norm for this Nation as they continue their Socialism ways.
miss-usa-2017-contestant-miss-dc-kara-mccullough-loses-black-twitter-affordable-healthcare-privilegeAnd as the Left continues their intolerant ways. You may have heard that the Left is going apoplectic over the response of the new Miss USA, Kara McCullough, to the question if health care is a right or a privilege. She – SHOCKINGLY – declared that health care is a PRIVILEGE. Well, you KNOW that just sent the Let off the deep end. How DARE she have an opinion that did not support their rhetoric?!? She must be SHAMED! And the Twitter world exploded. (They also HATED McCullough’s response about Feminism. Again, how dare she not walk in lockstep with them?! OUTRAGE!!!)
Have I mentioned that this young woman is a chemist for the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission? She clearly has a brain, and thinks for herself. That is two more strikes against her, dontcha know. Ahem.
Along those lines, while I understand that facts aren’t a big concern for the Left, there are some facts those of us in the informed community should know. The following Forbes article was in response to claims then-candidate Trump made in one of the debates, and it does a great job in highlighting the truth of single-payer care. From Forbes:

Canadian health care is popular with healthy Canadians who never really have to use it. But if you’re sick, look out. A 2014 study by the Fraser Institute found that wait times for medically necessary treatment in Canada have increased from 9.3 weeks in 1993—not great—to 18.2 weeks. Wait times were especially bad if you needed hip, knee or back surgery (42.2 weeks) or neurosurgery (31.2 weeks).

As we know from the scandal involving the U.S. Veterans Health Administration, health care delayed is health care denied. The people who suffer the most under the Canadian system are those who can’t afford to hop on a plane or pull strings to get treated in the United States.

Martin Samuels, the founder of the neurology department at Harvard’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital, found this out when he worked as a visiting professor in Canada. “The reason the Canadian health care system works as well as it does (and that is not by any means optimal) is because 90% of the population is within driving distance of the United States where the privately insured can be Seattled, Minneapolised, Mayoed, Detroited, Chicagoed, Clevelanded and Buffaloed,” Samuels wrote recently in Forbes. “In the United States, there is no analogous safety valve.” […] (Click here to read the rest.)

Exactly. As noted in the article, Canadians can come here, but where the hell will AMERICANS go when we need  care sooner than 18 weeks? Oh, yes – 18 weeks. That is what Canadians are dealing with according to the following report (which was in the Forbes piece):

Bear in mind we have a lot more people than Canada does, and we already have a MASSIVE doctor shortage. So how much longer do you think our wait times will be? Yeah, that single-payer thing is just AWESOME!! Not.

Health care is not a right. It is a privilege. No matter how much the Left might scream otherwise, they do not deserve to have us pay for their care. They do not have the right to force us to have wait times for care that will cause more harm in many cases. We should have the right to choose our own health care,  and be able to have treatment in a timely fashion. That is something we will not have if we cave to these irrational, fact-depleted Leftists.

At least that’s what I think. How about you? This is an Open Thread.

Great post Rev! And great points made by both you and your friend.

    From your friend:

#4 doesn’t fly, either. Enhance prevention? By whom? If the government is involved in “prevention” they’ll be intruding into every aspect of your life and determining if your lifestyle is appropriate or not.

Prevention? Like Michelle Obama’s idea for school lunches? My, that worked really well didn’t it?

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

      Thanks, Marge! I appreciate it!

Oh, yeah – “prevention” – because that isn’t the least bit subjective.

Columnist Gives Jimmy Kimmel What He Deserves for Political Attack

After Hollywood jackass Jimmy Kimmel was criticized for exploiting his son’s illness to push his political agenda and incorrectly insinuating that surgeries for newborns weren’t covered before Obamacare, he did a follow-up on the subject where he said, “I would like to apologize for saying that children in America should have health care. It was insensitive, it was offensive, and I hope you can find it in your heart to forgive me.”

Drop dead, Jimmy Kimmel, you colossal ass.

This is a great example of what may be the most annoying, dishonest thing that liberals habitually do.

This sort of rhetoric has become commonplace on the Left and it’s not just dishonest, it’s evil. It’s bad for the country. It could even potentially split the country apart one day because we won’t be able to continue to live with each other.

In fact, we’ve already reached the point where California’s threats to secede are being met with cries of “faster please, what can we do to help?” from millions of conservatives.

If those on the right cannot stand the self-righteous bigotry of the left then they need to back off it themselves. As an Independent I am so sick of both parties acting as if they and only they are principled and honest.

The fact is, neither of them fits that bill. One is just less evil and that’s why I usually vote for a Republican. All too often neither party has a decent candidate and I just leave some spots on my ballot blank.

I can vote for a lessor of two evils if it really is much less. But when the evils are just about the same neither gets my vote.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I totally hear you, but I do agree with the author that Kimmel IS a “colossal ass,” and that he intentionally misleads his viewing public purely for ideological reasons. His condescending sarcasm taking the point WAY too far in order to make any criticisms seem unfounded is a case in point.

But yeah – both sides do it. The Right just doesn’t have as big of a megaphone as the Left does since they seem to control the major networks (who use our airwaves) and the vast majority of cable stations.

      Good points!

      • kenoshamarge Says:

Oh I absolutely think Kimmel is an ass. He and Colbert stink up late night television and yet they wouldn’t have an audience if a lot of “conservatives” didn’t watch them too. People must like having all they believe mocked.

        • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

LOl – I know you do, and Colbert, too. (Shame to say, Colbert is from Charleston. He sure has forgotten his manners since he left. He is also a devout Catholic, btw.)

Excellent point. Those people wouldn’t even have jobs if more tuned them out…

          • kenoshamarge Says:

Colbert is NOT a devout Catholic. He’s not a good Christian of any stripe. Such rapid hate as he displays is anti-Christian.

He can call himself a Buick if he wants, that doesn’t make it true.

        • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I had a feeling that might be your take! 🙂

Mollie Hemingway has a great piece on how to read “news” from WaPo. The fact that their newsroom was cheering how many times their apparently false story was read makes it abundantly clear they have abandoned Journalism.

    Here is Hemingway’s piece:

    • kenoshamarge Says:

Love that Mollie! She has a nose for the truth that works equally well for b.s.! Thanks for sharing.

      • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

She really does. What a bright, articulate person she is. So glad she does what she does…

  6. kenoshamarge Says:

This from Mollie’s piece is well worth seeing again:

  7. GinaR Says:

Excellent post as always, Amy. And of course, because the Left is so tolerant of anyone having a differing viewpoint, they managed to harass and intimidate Miss USA into “clarifying” her comments about healthcare:

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

      Thanks so much, Gina!

Are you kidding me abt McCullough??? The Left are SUCH bullies, so freakin’ intolerant, and so demanding of EVERYONE walking in lockstep with them. Too bad she didn’t have the intestinal fortitude to say what she thought without having to rehearse some statement to get the Left off her back. This was a perfect opportunity for her to stand up to the bullies and be a good role model in so doing.

What a shame. I think a lot less of her now for her recanting her position. Sad, that. WOW.

      • kenoshamarge Says:

I think less of everyone that backs down to their incessant bullying. If we don’t stand up to them and their attacks soon no one will be able to say anything without their permission.

Cowardly behavior brings out the worst in bullies.

        • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Amen to you both! Yes, absolutely things will just get worse as long as people continue to kowtow to the Intolerant Left. So sick of them…

      • GinaR Says:

I agree with both of you. I can’t respect anyone who doesn’t have the courage of their convictions. If they allow the bullies to intimidate them into changing their position, they’re simply encouraging that kind of behavior. Just once I’d like to see someone give the finger to the bullies and tell them to stick it where the sun don’t shine!

  8. Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

This article was in our paper yesterday. This is why it is misguided for people like Bill DeBlasio to proclaim how much salt people should use. We need salt – our bodies rely on it – and unless you have a condition that prohibits you from having too much of it, the hysteria around it is unfounded.

The same goes for butter, which they now have decided isn’t so bad for you, or chicken skin – same thing – just came out saying that it doesn’t really make that much of a difference cooking chicken with the skin on, or nuts, or any number of other things. Moderation and common sense go a long way when it comes to what we eat.

    Here’s the article:
