About That Senate Healthcare Bill *Open Thread*

I generally try to refrain from writing about bills when they are in their infancy, as the Senate Healthcare Bill is. It has not even gone up for discussion yet, so there is no telling what is going to end up in it before it is all said and done. Let’s just hope that, unlike the Democrats, Republicans believe that “Reading is Fun-Damental,” and will actually read the damn thing in its entirety before voting on it.

I feel compelled to write about this bill now, though, since the Democrats, before having read Word ONE were already grandstanding about how HORRIBLE this bill is, what a killer it is, people will DIE as a result of it, as well as resurrecting this ridiculous ad, seen below. It comes with some great commentary by Stuart Varney about how ridiculous the Democrats’ reaction is:

Varney really nails it when discussing the economic impact of this bill as written, and how it will NOT be pushing Granny off a cliff.

Also weighing in on the Senate version with facts – something that seem to be in short supply on the “Feelings, Nothing More Than Feelings” side of the aisle – is Grover Norquist. Norquist is the Founder of Americans for Tax Reform, so taxes are his bailiwick. Norquist had this to say about the current version:

First, the bill repeals a total of $700 billion dollars in ObamaCare taxes (emphasis mine) that raise the cost of care, restrict choice, and hurt economic growth.

Second, the BCRA strengthens tax-preferred Health Savings Accounts, so that families are better able to save for health care expenses.

Third, the bill allows states to implement health care systems that work for families in the real world. No longer will we have a one size fits all system dreamed up by bureaucrats in Washington and policed by the IRS.

Fourth, the BCRA enacts long overdue entitlement reform that reins in out of control spending while ensuring the truly needy are protected.

ObamaCare imposed massive tax hikes that restricted the ability of individuals and families to make their own health care choices. The law imposed a $2,000 tax penalty on a family of four that failed to purchase “government-approved” health insurance and another $2,000 penalty on businesses for every employee they cannot provide with “government-approved” insurance.

In addition to these mandates, ObamaCare imposed middle class income tax hikes on families facing high medical bills. Prior to passage of the law, a family could deduct medical costs once they exceeded 7.5 percent of adjusted gross income. ObamaCare increased that to 10 percent, a tax increase that hits families making an average of $53,000.

Funny how the Democrats studiously ignore in all their ranting and raving about whatever the Repulicans present – doesn’t really matter what is in it since they don’t read it – the vast amount of taxation that goes on in the Obamacare law. And this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Norquist focuses a good bit on the Health Savings Account issue, and for good reason:

While the BCRA repeals ObamaCare’s taxes, it also expands the ability of American families to use tax-preferred savings accounts to save for health care expenses.

Currently, 20 million Americans use Healthcare Savings Accounts (HSAs) and another 30 million use Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs). The Senate bill repeals ObamaCare’s taxes that restrict the ability of families to use these accounts. The bill restores the ability of families to use HSAs to purchase over the counter medicines. The bill also eliminates ObamaCare’s $2,500 cap on FSAs.

The bill also doubles the contribution limit on HSAs so they become an even better tool for families to pay for family health care expenses. This expansion also reduces taxes on HSA users by almost $20 billion over the next decade. […] Click here to read the rest.)

Removing the low cap on FSAs is no small thing. Neither is reducing the taxes paid by families by $2 billion a year. WOW. Yep, that ain’t no chump change.

I have no doubt there are some flaws with the bill as written, same as the House version. But it sure isn’t the Death Knell For Americans that Democrats scream that it is, either. Not for nothing, but they are acting like Obamacare actually WORKS.

cnn-obamacare-009-01-800x416We know it does not, not by a long shot, whether from the massive cost increases many of us have suffered to the colossal lies told by Obama, et al. One of those lies was about the Co-ops. As Charlie Hurt from the Washington Times noted today, #19 (out of 23) Obamacare Co-op has now failed. And those exchanges got $2 BILLION of your tax paying dollars, by the way. Now it is in the toilet, another Obamacare casualty.

And on the matter of Obamacare Co-Ops, Forbes wrote this piece a couple of years ago, “Obamacare’s Co-Ops: A Bigger Scandal Than Solyndra?” It contained this startling tidbit:

Another recent analysis – this one by the insurance rating firm A. M. Best Company – similarly reported that all but one of the co-ops had financial losses through the end of last year. The aggregate underwriting losses at the co-ops hit nearly $244 million through last September, and by all accounts, have continued to increase since.

One of the report’s authors told CNBC that when A.M. Best looked at the co-ops last year, just seven had federal loans that amounted to more than 100% of the value of their total capital and surplus. Now they’re all over 100%. A.M. Best noted that one co-op plan in Arizona, Meritus Mutual Health Partners, had long-term loans of nearly 1,000% and 14 others have loans totaling more than 200% of their assets.

This butchery didn’t come about without a lot of government assistance along the way. Collectively, the taxpayers have loaned the co-ops more than $2.4 billion spread over just 23 health plans. Now, Uncle Sam stands to lose a good chunk of that money as the plans start filing for bankruptcy. In Iowa, the bankruptcy of just one co-op will likely cost taxpayers all of the $180 million they flushed into the insurer.[…] (Click here to read the rest.)

And by “government assistance, ” of course, the author means YOUR TAX PAYING DOLLARS.

So yeah, you don’t hear many Democrats taking responsibility for the CBO-claim that Obamacare will cost us $2 TRILLION when they go on and on about how the CBO scored the Republicans’ plan. Nope.

Bottom line, it is too soon to tell just what will end up in the new healthcare bill, so the Democrats can stop their histrionics already and try something new for a change: working with the Republicans to get a bill that helps ALL of us.

What a concept, huh? That’s it for me. Feel free to discuss any of the above or whatever else is on your minds. This is an Open Thread.

Important topic and important that “facts” not “feelings” are told. More posts like this one are needed. If people make up their minds on talking points, hyperbole and partisan rhetoric they are being willfully blind.

Unfortunately most in media are not competent to even explain this bill to the public. Nor are most politicians since they will not read it. Their aids will and report back to them. Did we elect aids to represent us?

It’s not that I trust Mitch McConnell – heaven forbid – I most definitely do not! He is as big a liar as Obama and has had more practice.

And looky, looky, all of a sudden Ninny Pelosi thinks a bill should be read before it’s passed. At her age a flip-flop like that could break bones.

      Thanks, Marge – much appreciated!

And you are so right – decisions of such importance must come from FACTS, not feelings, and from READING the bill, not expecting the media to be honest brokers on what is in it Certainly not from people like Chuck Schumer or Elizabeth Warren who have gone out of their way to misrepresent what is in this bill.

      Pelosi. Wow.

Those of us that didn’t support Trump are angry because he promised, and so did all the other Republicans trying to get elected of re-elected, on repeal and replace. This bill is tinkering IMO.

Better than Obamacare? Yes. What they promised? No.

The Trump fan club sees nothing wrong with anything he wants or does. Like the Obama fan club they are obsessed with their love of a politician – just typing that makes me queasy.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

A number of Republicans keep making that point, that they were elected to REPEAL this law, and that is not happening. Rand Paul suggested to Trump that they need to split this in two: one part to deal with the taxes involved, which will get the votes of Reps; and one part for the economic giveaways in it which will bring the Democrats on board.

They promised repeal, they ran on repeal, they were elected on repeal, and as always, they are stabbing us in the back on repeal. Grrrr.

Cartoonist Steve Kelly lays out the Dem side of health care quite well I think:

Heaven protect us from another generation of Clintons. And this one isn’t even as smart as the two crooks she sprung from.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Uh, yeah. They are acting like if only the Republicans capitulate to everything they want, they’d be HAPPY to work with them. Ahem. And yet, we see the horrendous mess they left behind. Just WHAT will they do differently that they refused to do when Obama was Prez?

  7. kenoshamarge Says:

And then there’s the Mitch of it all. He’s not only dishonest, and that’s fact not smear, he’s also slow. By design I would think.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

You are so right, Marge. Honestly, his wanting to hold out all this money to grease palms rather than do what is RIGHT FOR AMERICANS makes me mighty irritable…

Professor Fired for Racist Tirade Claims She Was ‘Lynched’ by Administration

Currently unemployed professor Lisa Durden didn’t think anything would happen to her. She believed she could broadcast her unhinged racism to the country, and the college that signs her paycheck would just shrug it off. After all, how many other professors have been fired for racist comments against white people in recent years? If you’re thinking “none,” then you’re probably right.

However, Durden was oh-so-very-wrong this time.

Proving that she’s yet to learn anything from this, she then evoked the most absurdly racist imagery she could think of to garner sympathy:

Durden was initially suspended by the community college after the Carlson fracas, which she claims was done with no reason.

“They did this to humiliate me,” Durden said about the suspension.

“Essex County College publicly lynched me in front of my students.”

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Oh, good Lord. Yeah that’s the problem. She is the victim of racism for making a bunch of racist, offensive comments.

Just like Amb. Susan Rice is only bein g looked at now for leaking names in violation of laws because of racism and sexism. Right. Got it.

      • kenoshamarge Says:

If you have no logic or reason and when lies and deceit fail – play the victim card. Although that technique must be wearing thin even among the faithful by now.

I have to share the following video I took of the gorgeous Saddlebred filly who lives next door. We often see her when we walk DJ on the golf course late afternoon before his (and our) dinner, if she isn’t in her run-in shed. She is also the one we can see from our house and dock daily.

She was just raring to go tonight. Such a beauty:

    • kenoshamarge Says:

She is beautiful and obviously enjoying being a horse. Poetry in motion.

      • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Isn’t she something? I get to see her just abt every day. She is just stunningly beautiful in person. I love her!
