How Much Longer Must We Endure This Show? *Open Thread*

That would be the Comey Show. Good Lord, the man’s book JUST came out on Tuesday, and he has already been on about a gazillion shows. Well, maybe not quite that many, but it sure seems that way.

One might think it all began with the ABC Major Production of former FBI Director Comey Sunday night with George Stephanopoulos. Oh, no – it began BEFORE that with all of the many segments and teasers ABC had out about the interview and the coverage on other news stations of the interview. It was, and is, exhausting.

So just how did this overly-hyped interview do in the ratings? Probably not as well as ABC thought it was going to do. Let’s put it this way – the Country Music Awards did way better than the interview, as did the porn-star Stormy Daniels interview. Oops. Here are the numbers:

That was less than the 12.1 million viewers CBS’s broadcast of Country Music Awards drew. The awards show began at 8 p.m. and ran through the 11 p.m. hour, while Comey’s interview ran from 10 p.m. to 11 p.m.

The Sunday night interview with ABC’s George Stephanopoulos was Comey’s first since being fired by President Trump last May.

The 9.8 million figure fell well-short of the Stormy Daniels interview on CBS’s “60 Minutes” three weeks ago, which drew 22 million viewers.

It was also almost 10 million less than the number of viewers who tuned in for Comey’s testimony to the Senate Intelligence Committee last June, which nabbed 19.5 million viewers. […] (Click here to read the rest.)

And yet, that is not stopping Comey from being on all kinds of shows from Colbert to Good Morning America, and more. Ugh.

Now, you would have to be living under a rock to miss either the previews or the round up of Comey’s interview. But one thing was clear – he was self-righteous, sanctimonious, and leveled one ad hominem after another against Trump, even talking about Trump’s hands and other physical attributes.

CNN had a focus group down here in my neck of the woods of Republicans in Charleston County who watched the entire show (bless their hearts!). This is what they had to say, via Daily Wire:

Yeah, that whole “morally unfit” thing was quite the major judgment call by someone who lied under oath numerous times, admittedly stole FBI documents that he leaked to a professor friend of his to leak to the media, never mind not interviewing Clinton before absolving her of wrong doing, or not charging people who lied to the FBI (Huma Abeden and Cheryl Mills), or were lying while in the FBI (Andrew McCabe). Yet he thinks he has the MORAL authority to call out anyone else? Please.

Despite all of those issues, there were lots of questions Comey SHOULD have been asked during this extensive interview, according to the Kimberly Strassel ofWall Street Journal Editorial Board. Here are a few of the questions not asked. From IJR:

Strassel noted that Comey has repeatedly cited that former British spy Christopher Steele’s dossier is “credible.”

Therefore, she wondered, “Does the FBI routinely view as ‘credible’ sources hired by political operatives?”

Despite his claim that Steele had a “track record,” she wondered if he was concerned he was working for politicians in an election year.

She called for an explanation as to why specific unverified claims about Trump campaign adviser Carter Page were used as a basis for a FISA warrant four times.

Comey declared that the dossier’s central premise, “that Russia attempted to interfere in [the] election” was what mattered.

“Can you name a time in modern history where Russia wasn’t doing that?” she asked. “So why then give special credence to a politically motivated, salacious dossier?

Uh, yeah, those are some good questions about Christopher Steele and that whole Dossier thing. Strassel asked some other good ones on that topic, which you can read in the article.

She also asked about Comey’s lying:

If, as Comey stated, no one should lie to the FBI, she asked why Steele, if he lied, “has not been prosecuted.”

Had she been interviewing Comey, Strassel tweeted she would have posed the question:

Again, given your strong feelings about lying: Why did the FBI never take any follow up action against Huma Abedin, whose statements to FBI are at odds with emails FBI possessed?

On that note, she would have also asked why the FBI didn’t interview Clinton until after a year of work and after he made a judgment.

“FBI usually interviews witnesses up front, to see if they lie at the start,” she tweeted. “Why all the special Hillary interview accommodations?”

After Comey’s holier-than-thou attitude, I would have LOVED if Stephanopoulos had asked these questions, but alas, he didn’t.

George also didn’t ask these important questions of James Comey:

Strassel noted that Comey has stated he believes in the “chain of command” and referenced former Attorney General Loretta Lynch’sproposal to use the word “matter” when discussing the Clinton investigation.

Finally, Strassel pointed out that many of his comments seem to imply that he factored politics into his decision-making.

“Does this not run directly counter to [Department of Justice] policy, which specifically states: ‘politics must play no role in the decisions of federal investigators?’” she asked. […](Click here to read the rest.)

Oh, boy – I tell you what, I would have paid cash American dollars to watch an interview of Comey using Strassel’s 28 questions. Too bad that isn’t the level of journalism to which we were subjected. (I know, I know, what else is new?!)

This cartoon, which our dear KenoshaMarge shared on Tuesday, really sums up this whole Comey media barrage perfectly:

Yep, I would say that cartoon sums it up well!

I have to say, though, that considering more people think Comey should be prosecuted now after his interview than before it, he might just want to lay low for a bit. From Daily Wire:

Almost three times as many likely U.S. voters (38%) said that Comey did a worse job as FBI Director than his predecessors.

After his interview on Sunday and launch of his new book, more Americans now want to see him criminally prosecuted (46%) than wanted to see him criminally prosecuted last year (41%).

At the same time, the number of people who think he should not be criminally prosecuted sits at 34%, which is a 13-point drop from last year when 47% said he should not face prosecution. (Click here to read the rest.)

That should be a wake up call for Comey to shut his piehole already. What support he had is eroding away – rapidly. And more people want to see him get his comeuppance for his – dare I say it – immoral behavior than before he started shooting his mouth off over his novela “non-fiction” book. Just a helpful suggestion for Comey.

One last (FUNNY) thing about the book: Whitehouse Dossier reports that that only ONE customer showed up at a fashionable D.C. bookstore when Comey’s book became available. One. They expected hordes of people, but what they got was the media. Ahahaha…

That is it for me. Your thoughts and opinions on this or any other topic are welcome. This is an Open Thread.

This is a beautiful story of love, kindness, and compassion from a couple of officers to a homeless family:

How sad that stories like this, that probably happen everyday, are not more of a focus for the media. Inspiring fear of those that might be able to help you is wrong.

Bless these two wonderful officers for their big hearts. There are 3 kids and one mother who will always look at the police a bit different from now on.

      • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Isn’t that a great story? And you are right – these two officers completely changed the perspectives of this family. No doubt, their story is changing lots of people’s perspectives abt the police…

Love your title Rev! Good and timely post.

And I wonder how long too. I suspect if Trump would stop tweeting about both Comey and Daniels they would both fade away. He gives them gravitas by giving them the attention of POTUS.

I understand that Trump and many of his supporters want him to have a way and a place to respond to the lies and innuendo that pervade the MSM. But use that judiciously or you are just another twitidiot and lose the power of the Presidential pulpit.

  3. kenoshamarge Says:

Trump needs to start thinking about unintended consequences. Comey doesn’t need his help in de-legitimizing himself he’s doing just fine on his own.

  4. kenoshamarge Says:

Comey was a hell of an FBI Director. The Strzok, Page, McCabe scheming and plotting took place right under his nose. And after Hillary and Huma deleted 60,000 Emails and smashed all their devices with hammers and bleach bit, he still wasn’t sure on their intention. ~ Mark Simone

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

EXCELLENT commentary by Simone. He is spot on in his assessment of Comey’s incompetence.

Cartoonist Joe Heller and I disagree politically most of the time. In this instance I thought this was a perfect tribute to Barbara Bush. I applaud him for it.

Melania Trump Hasn’t Been on a Single Magazine Cover Since Trump Took Office

If the Trumps were Democrats, Melania would be on every cover of every chic women’s magazine in the world every month. ~ James Woods

Woods may be exaggerating a little bit — only Oprah can put herself on the cover of a magazine every month, and it’s her own magazine — but he does make an interesting point. First Lady Melania Trump has not graced the cover of a single magazine in the United States since her husband took office over a year ago. Michelle Obama, on the other hand, was featured on at least thirty magazine covers during her husband’s eight years in office. What gives?

There must be a really good reason why this is so – after all it would be hard to find another first lady who was more photogenic. And that is without displaying her spectacular figure. The smile in the image below is wonderful IMO and I’m not even that much of a fan. I just am not in favor of bias.

And it is bias again, and petty as usual.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

It is hard to believe that these magazines cannot bring themselves to put the FLOTUS on their cover because she is married to Trump/a Republican. It is ridiculous.

I mean, really – even if she WASN’T model-beautiful, that she is the First Lady is reason enough.

      “Petty,” indeed…

    • fyreglass Says:

I have wondered about that myself. Michelle Obama is STILL being interviewed and asked to speak, yet the current First Lady is not. Why?

Then I look at what little coverage the press DOES give us on Melania – whining about her choice of shoes, whether or not she smiles at something (really???), the sleeves on her coat. Nitpicking little nothings.

      Bias? You betcha!

      • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

It seems they would rather cut their arms off than give Melania, and by extension, Donald, favorable press. Did other outlets show how kind Melania was to an 8th grade boy in the White House for a program when he accidentally knocked over a glass of water? She immediately told him that it was fine and that it was only water.

Her kindness toward children and warmth seem genuine. Kyle Kashuv, also a Parkland school student, said she was SO nice to him when they met, “the nicest human being I have ever met,” he said:

But you don’t hear a lot abt that. Nope. You just have pinheads like Kimmel making fun of the accent of an IMMIGRANT who speaks FIVE languages just because she is married to Trump. Wow.

      • kenoshamarge Says:

Perfect phrase to describe these fools Fyre: “Nitpicking little nothings.” 😉

    • piper Says:

They always write about the cost of her clothing, putting the price before the item like $2300 dress or $1,500 shoes. So what – she pays for her clothes unlike Michelle who was always ‘gifted’ by various designers. Plus her clothes always fit and are appropriate for her age.

      • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

piper, that is SO true! Yes, they DO always comment on how much Melania’s clothes cost. Good observation, and that Michelle was always given her clothes, even though she and Barack are millionaires.

Mollie Hemingway: Robert Mueller’s FBI Repeatedly Abused Prosecutorial Discretion

Journalist Mike Allen of Axios recently said that one word described Special Counsel Robert Mueller, and that word was “unafraid.”

The context for his remarks on Fox News’ “Special Report” was that Mueller had just spun off to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York a bit of his limitless investigation into President Donald J. Trump. Allen’s comment was like so many others from media and pundit types since the special counsel was launched. If there’s one word to describe the media’s relationship to Mueller, it’s “unquestioning.”

For instance, as I noted to Allen, Mueller was also “unafraid” at completely botching the anthrax killer case, wasting more than $100 million in taxpayer dollars, destroying the lives of multiple suspects, and chasing bad leads using bad methods. Let’s look at that and other cases involving how Mueller and those he placed in positions of power used their authorities and decided what charges to pursue.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I saw that Special Report. Hemingway is the one who is really “unafraid” – she speaks up when she sees this kind of (grossly undeserved) fawning.

When all of these people, especially politicians, kept parading on tv abt how awesome Mueller was/is, how we could trust him, how he was a straight shooter and more, Mueller’s OWN ACTIONS made/make it clear that NONE of that is true.

Good on Hemingway for laying out the case of Mueller’s foibles and how we have been sold a bill of goods – thanks to COMEY, I might add.

      • kenoshamarge Says:

I am a big Mollie Hemingway fan and have been for some time. However I think she outdid herself with this article. It contains so many FACTS, actual facts not sleazy lies and innuendo about a man who is all but deified in the media.

Truth is important if we are to form logical and reasonable opinions. She gave us plenty of truth in this one post and I am grateful to her for that.

Some I was vaguely aware of but back then didn’t have the access to information that we have now.

        • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I could not agree more. I LOVE when she is on Special Report. Her writing is fantastic, and as you note, she actually uses FACTS to back up what she says. But hearing her talk, just off the top of her head, and how SMART she is, is a real joy.

Thanks for putting up this post. Truth and facts are two things that seem to be SORELY lacking these days. Such a breath of fresh air when someone actually employs both…

  11. kenoshamarge Says:

The media scoff in feigned outrage at President Trump’s claims that the FBI has a reputation that is in tatters. But the last 15 years of leadership of the FBI under Mueller and Comey have largely shown that to be true because of how the FBI handles it cases. ~ Mollie Hemingway

  13. Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

A friend shared this on Facebook. It is just too good:

  14. fyreglass Says:

Comey should stay off the television – even when being fed softball questions like those pitched by Stephanopoulos. In every video I have seen so far, Comey comes off as a holier-than-thou baby. As whiny as David Hogg – except Hogg has more balls.

  15. kenoshamarge Says:

Mitch McConnell Considering Keeping Senate Open Much Longer During Week to Force Democrats to Either Allow Votes on Trump Nominees, or Spend Most of Campaign Season Filibustering.

Ten Democrats from Trump states cannot afford keeping filibusters going through weekends. They have to go home to defend seats in peril.

So: If you want to play your games, fine. But now the Senate’s open 24 hours seven days a week. How much is it worth it to you to block these people? ~ Ace of Spades

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

That sounds like a FABULOUS idea!! Heck yeah! I’d be all over making these Dems either DO THEIR JOBS and stop blocking qualified candidates just because they are Trump nominees or lose their seats because they played such childish games.

My snide comment is that Comey doesn’t just LOOK like a tool…
