“Do As I Say Or Else,” Threatens King Obama *Open Thread*

Oh, boy. Seems King Obama truly does not care about the Rule of Law, one of the very few demands of his oath of office. That point was made most forcefully in the House Hearing on Obama’s executive action on Immigration on Wednesday by Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-VA):

[…] The Constitution is clear: it is Congress’ duty to write our nation’s laws. Yet, President Obama admitted that “I just took an action to change the law.” The Constitution is also clear that once laws are enacted, it is the President’s responsibility to enforce them. The Constitution requires the President to “take Care that the Laws be faithfully executed.” Yet, the very integrity of our immigration laws is now in question. […] (Click here to read the rest.)

Indeed, “faithfully” executing the laws of the county isn’t a SUGGESTION for the President of the United States, it is a REQUIREMENT of the President of the United States. Obama understand that – sort of, that is. From the White House Twitter account (via BizPacReview):

Uh huh. No, that is NOT what the Constitution says, Mr. President. There are no BUTS in the Constitutional admonition to FAITHFULLY EXECUTE THE LAWS. No, “unless you or someone in your party really doesn’t like them,” no, “unless you think you can score more votes if you don’t,” none of that is in there. But you sure wouldn’t know it by the way Obama is acting. Not only is he making this Executive Fiats, and demanding they, not the law, be enforced, he is THREATENING those charged with fulfilling the law hell to pay if they refuse to follow his unconstitutional declaration. […] “But what are the consequences?” José Diaz-Balart asked ther president, according to a White House transcript. “Because how do you ensure that ICE agents or Border Patrol won’t be deporting people like this? I mean, what are the consequences.”

“José, look, the bottom line is, is that if somebody is working for ICE and there is a policy and they don’t follow the policy, there are going to be consequences to it,” Obama said. “So I can’t speak to a specific problem. What I can talk about is what’s true in the government, generally.”

He likened it to the military, and said that military personnel “are expected to follow” orders they’re given. However, servicemen and women are not expected to follow illegal orders. […] (Click here to read the rest.)

Um, once again, this so-called “Constitutional Scholar,” a laughable appellation considering not only his actions, but his past performance, is unclear on the concept: this is not a lawful order. As Rep. Goodlatte reminded Obama, CONGRESS makes laws, not the President. Moreover, you would think a “Constitutional Scholar” would understand that you might not want to threaten those charged with protecting our borders to enforce an unconstitutional order that has been STAYED for the time being. But that doesn’t stop Obama, oh, no. NOTHING, apparently, will stop Obama, which is a chilling thought all by itself. How it is that the President of the United States has such a cavalier attitude about the law is troubling indeed.

Furthermore, As Rep. Trey Gowdy noted in his opening remarks at the Houes Hearing on Wednesday, the willy nilly changing of laws by the Executive may work for one party today, but the impact of doing so has far-reaching consequences:

This is the heart of Gowdy’s remarks from The Blaze (h/t Facebook friend):

[…] “You may benefit from the president’s failure to enforce the law today,” Gowdy said at a House Judiciary Committee hearing on Obama’s action.

“But I’ll make you this promise,” he warned. “There will come a day where you will cry out for the enforcement of the law. There will come a day when you long for the law to be the foundation of this republic.”

“So you be careful what you do with the law today, because if you weaken it today, you weaken it forever,” he concluded. […] (Click here to read the rest.)

“Be careful what you do with the law today” is the crux of the matter in a nutshell.

Not only that, but this kind of dismissal of standing Immigration law, this “illiberal” approach, as Victor Davis Hanson notes, creates acrimony. From Townhall:

A federal judge has temporarily blocked President Obama’s executive order that overrode existing immigration law. The result is more acrimony and chaos.

[…]

A president by fiat would nullify existing laws and order federal agencies to ignore them. Or he would issue executive orders contrary to both his prior promises and to the Constitution.

President Obama did not, as he alleges, override Congress because it failed to act on immigration. Instead he ignored it because Congress would not act in a particular fashion that he found ideologically akin to his own beliefs. […] (Click here to read the rest.)

And that very action not only violates the Constitution, but creates chaos.

The bottom line is this: Playing fast and loose with our laws and with our borders is simply unacceptable. Not only is it unacceptable, it is a blatant and glaring violation of the very oath of office required for the President. And it is about damn time Obama was held to account for his actions, and now his threats. That kind of behavior simply cannot stand in a republic, in a nation whose very fabric is based on Law. It is high time the Executive Branch acted like it knows that.
