This morning brings us some new folks in positions of power up the Eastern Seaboard. We now have a Socialist as the Mayor of New York; an overwhelming win for Chris Christie in NJ (make of that what you will); and a very close race for Governor of Virgina.
It is the latter on which I want to focus. The race between McAuliffe, former DNC Chair and Hillary Clinton Campaign Chairman, and the Commonwealth of Virginia’s AG, Cuccinelli, was much, much closer than anyone thought it would be. It is telling to me that after ALL the heavy hitters who came to campaign for McAuliffe from President Obama to former President Bill Clinton, that is was this close. And without the Libertarian spoiler, Sarvis, the chances that Cuccinelli would have won rise dramatically.
I mention this, and the role of the Spoiler because so many people are upset about this win, and assume it is a win for Hillary Clinton in 2016. I am not convinced of that myself. I think that, considering all the cards stacked against Cuccinelli, from the President appearing in Virginia to being outspent in a MAJOR way, things are not as dire as they might appear.
That said, the Cuccinelli people were pretty upset at the way the Republican Governors Association assisted Cuccinelli, or rather, did NOT assist him. Seems Sarvis wasn’t the only Spoiler. The Daily Caller has the story:
“Bobby Jindal and his political team totally blew it,” harrumphed one advisor for Ken Cuccinelli the morning after a closer-than-expected loss.
Cuccinelli, who narrowly lost last night’s gubernatorial election to Terry McAuliffe, was badly outspent in the days and weeks leading up to the election. The New York Times‘ Jonathan Martin described Cuccinelli’s plight as having been “close to abandoned at the end.” He was. As Politico’s James Hohmann reported, ”The Republican National Committee spent about $3 million on Virginia this year, compared to $9 million in the 2009.” And as the Roanoke Times noted, in 2009, the Chamber of Commerce spent $973,000 on Bob McDonnell, but “[t]his year, the chamber gave Cuccinelli nothing.”
But it was the Republican Governor’s Association (RGA) and chairman Bobby Jindal who drew the most ire from a Cuccinelli advisor I spoke to on Wednesday morning — this, despite the fact that the RGA spent millions on the race.
Bobby Jindal’s presidential campaign is over,” said the Cuccinelli advisor. “He screwed this up so bad. And I don’t know why. The campaign knew it was moving numbers over ObamaCare. And the RGA was not very far from that information, they could have obtained it themselves,” the advisor continued. “They should have given the money to the campaign to spend as opposed to running these stupid China ads. They just blew it.” […] (Click here to read the rest.)
It does beg the question why in the world the RGA would spend a THIRD less this time around than in the last election, especially with such heavy hitters coming in on the other side, but also the momentum the Cuccinelli campaign was generating toward the end.
Moreover, it defies logic that the RGA would choose THIS time to focus on CHINA, of all things. Really??? WTH was Jindal thinking?
Meanwhile, Chris Christie has an interesting take on how the Republicans are conducting themselves now:
[…] “I think that the party’s got to focus on winning again,” Christie told CNN’s Jake Tapper. “You know, sometimes I feel like our party cares more about winning the argument than they care about winning elections. And if you don’t win elections, you can’t govern. And if you can’t govern, you can’t change the direction of a state, like we’ve done in New Jersey.” […] (Click here to read the rest.)
The Governor may have a point there. Whether one is a Republican or Independent, right now, the Republicans are the only ones who can stand up to this runaway overreach by Democrats. So, if they don’t get it right, it affects ALL of us as we are seeing with the impact of Obamacare.
And speaking of Obamacare. Kathleen Sebellius will be questioned today by the Senate about the debacle that is Obamacare. I have to wonder if Sebellius will also be asked about Obama’s willy-nilly changes to an existing law. Perhaps someone should share the following Letter to the Editor from my local paper, the Post and Courier, with Obama and the rest of the Democrats:
[…] In the separation of powers, the Founders were very deliberate in their design. Only the legislative branch has the power to create law or change existing law, and only the House of Representatives has the power of the purse strings. Madison makes it very clear in Federalist No. 58 that the power of the purse strings was designed “to redress grievances’’ and restrict executive power.
Five times after its passage, Mr. Obama has unilaterally changed the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) by granting waivers to political constituents.
Most brazenly, he has exempted Congress and given employers a year-long suspension. Obama is not king; he doesn’t get to modify the laws he likes or dislikes.
[…]
It also violates a basic belief that people should not be given preferential treatment based on their ties to power.
Obamacare was a major overreach of power. Whether Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid or civil rights, never in this nation’s history has major social legislation been enacted on a straight party-line vote.
In every case, there was significant bipartisan agreement that gave the law legitimacy. Obamacare, however, was passed without one single Republican vote. Moreover, it was rammed through using a conjured, if not unethical, parliamentary maneuver —reconciliation. Reconciliation is a legislative procedure of both houses, but used mainly in the Senate. It’s intended for budget bills only, using simple majorities. To avoid a Republican filibuster in the Senate, Democrats made an end run around legislative rules by declaring that the bill was a budget item. This allowed passage of the bill in its final form needing only 51 votes (vs. 60 to stop a filibuster). […] (Click here to read the rest.)
I think the author of that letter makes a lot of good points, and it is high past time that this Fiefdom notion was spoiled for “King” Obama.
Interesting, often disturbing, times in this country. The next year will be intriguing to watch, that’s for sure.
Okay, your turn. What’s your take on the winners and losers? The role of Spoilers? The hearing on Weds. with Sebellius? It’s all yours now!

It is a testament to the tenacity of Cuccinelli, the first AG to challenge Obamacare, that he only lost by such a slim margin…in the face of the RNC hanging him out to dry the way they did. It should also scare the Democrats….people hate Obamacare already….but of course McAuliffe is out there speechifying like he won in a landslide and it is all pie in the sky now. The fact that the highest contributor to Sarvis is one of Obama’s top bundlers should tell anybody that Sarvis was a plant by the Democrats to split the Republican vote in Virginia. I think it merits a full investigation but of course…there will never be one.
November 6, 2013 at 12:29 pm |
Indeed it is, especially since he was facing a lot of odds, including the Press where the Tea Party is concerned.
And there is little doubt that had Sarvis not been in the race, and not received Dem backing (gee – that can’t POSSIBLY be intentional – cough, cough), Cuccinelli would have done better.
For those who haven’t heard abt the Dem bundler, here’s a link: http://www.theblaze.com/stories/2013/11/05/revealed-obama-campaign-bundler-helping-fund-libertarian-in-tight-va-gubernatorial-race/

I was disgusted by the VA election, I got to sit right next to it and watch it like a slow motion train wreck. All the Virginians I know (some are actually Rs, they still have those in VA) could say about Cuccinelli (or “the cooch” they call him) was how terrible he is.
Literally stuff like this, every day:
He wants to stop blow jobs!
He hates gays!
He will stop birth control!
He wants to control our bedrooms!
All I heard was uterus bedroom condom uterus blowjob abortion. Seriously! Enough! There was just nothing Cuccinelli could say to stem this tide, and it got this Obama plant fake libertarian Sarvis a lot of the “white guy” vote from my personal friends. Sickening.
Meanwhile McAuliffe is in bed with all the crony business guys stealing money to build the metro that doesn’t quite go all the way to Dulles, hes kissing Clinton and Obama ass, and has a small/buried on page 17 news article a day where he is stealing money from some shareholders or the taxpayers, hes constantly influence peddling and behaving like scum. But sure! “The cooch” is what is stopping you from getting that blow job! So vote for Sarvis.
Oh, and everyone I know who speaks Spanish natively (like half of Arlington/Alexandria now), comes from Somalia/Nigeria/Liberia (a third of the remainder) voted D. Why? Who the hell knows but that’s the “demographic shift” they are speaking about in the news. People who fled their homeland to Maryland, and then subsequently fled Maryland because its becoming crappy have moved to NOVA to make it crappy too.
I have no idea why people are so stupid or what can be done to fix any of this.
November 7, 2013 at 10:10 am |
Oh, my – the Dem Smear Machine was alive and well during the VA election, that’s for sure. As Cindy pointed out below, there were a NUMBER of things Cuccinelli did RIGHT for women, for example, so it makes sense he would be demonized on matters of that nature. Nice.
And McAuliffe – UGH. It just makes me nuts that his unethical, perhaps illegal, behavior was swept under the rug. Those people who took over NoVa will deserve whatever they get, but the rest of that fine Commonwealth sure doesn’t. VA was such a nice state before the bleed over from DC. What a mess.
I don’t know why people are so stupid either, hc. It is a question I ponder regularly. The blinders people have on are mighty good, that’s all I can say. But what their blind ideology is doing to this country is beyond disturbing.
Btw, I hope you are doing well – despite all the stupidity, that is. I recall you were going through some things not too long ago, and I wanted to let you know I have been thinking of you and hoping things have worked out for the best for you.
November 6, 2013 at 12:06 pm |
Cuz—I’m just sick about the Cuccinelli loss…..and very perturbed at Jindal!
Did you read that the Libertarian in that race was funded by one of Obama’s fundraisers? Not very fair at all…..but, they’re Democrats, so expect nothing else!
November 6, 2013 at 12:33 pm |
I hear you, Cindy. And yes, that whole bundler thing, even HAVING that candidate there, smells a bit fishy.
Thank you for the info on Cuccinelli. It’s a shame that info wasn’t out there more. Maybe if the RNC and RGA hadn’t bailed on him, he COULD have gotten that out more, and focused on his RECORD, not having to fight against the incessant McAuliffe smears.
I just cannot believe McAuliffe will now be the Gov. of VA. He has never even held a position like this before EVER. Heck, I never liked him even when I was a Dem., and I sure don’t like him now. But VA will get for what it voted.
I did see Larry Sabato from UVA talk abt this earlier. He said that McAuliffe will have a very difficult time this being his first elected office, AND the VA House is 68% (I think it was) Rep., so he will have a hard time with that.
Cuccinelli deserved better than the RNC.RGA gave him. Like I said, Indie (like me) or Rep., this is the only game in town to combat the Dems dissolution of the Constitution and forcing partisan laws down our throats. They need to get their act together and soon.
November 6, 2013 at 1:41 pm |
Cuz—I never liked McAuliffe, either; in fact, it was m ainly because I thought he wasn’t very good as the DNC chair, etc….He was always such a goofy-acting guy. No substance…And yeah, what HAS he ever done besides fundraise? Nada. But the Clintons want one of their own to carry their flag in Virginia for 2016.
Jeeze, seems like a generation ago that I even gave a flip about the Clintons!
November 6, 2013 at 12:13 pm |
Sorry, this is long—but so informative about Cuccinelli and what the state of Virginia just threw away………From Wiki:
Cuccinelli has been a staunch advocate against human trafficking during his time in office, describing it as “one of the most egregious human rights violations”.[100] He has slammed popular media for portraying prostitution and other forms of selling sex as “just another career choice”.[100] While in the state Senate he created a plan, which he has implemented as attorney general, to crack down on trafficking on the state and served on the Senate Human Trafficking Commission.[101] As attorney general, he has devoted full time staff in the attorney general’s office to prosecute human trafficking,[102] and in May 2013 one of his assistant attorneys general was honored by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children for breaking up and prosecuting a sex trafficking ring in Fairfax County.[103] The advocacy group Polaris Project named Virginia one of the most improved states in cracking down on human trafficking in 2010 under Cuccinelli’s leadership.[104] He made human trafficking legislation his priority in his efforts during the 2013 General Assembly session, teaming up with Democratic and Republican lawmakers in support of three anti-human trafficking bills,[105] all of which were passed and signed into law.[106][107][108][109]
Well, Cuz—See why the women in Virginia needed to fear that sexist Cuccinelli?? Ha! NOT!
Democratic women are such sheep.
November 6, 2013 at 12:17 pm |
More on Cuccinelli, from his college days:
While living in a group house in college, Cuccinelli heard a woman shriek when an intruder climbed into her bed. After the incident, Cuccinelli established a peer-to-peer sexual assault prevention group on campus, and became a confidant for survivors of sexual assault.[9] Cuccinelli worked together with feminists on campus to convince the university to create a full-time sexual assault education coordinator position.

today’s so called feminists are like today’s so called democrats. both have thrown away everything ideal that was fought for and won over many years.
today’s feminists took an ideal the abortion should be safe and rare to abortion is a form of birth control and it is ok for the dr gosnell’s to perform them in dirty unsafe conditions and the taxpayer should pay for them whether or not it goes against their religious beliefs.
it is just great for a female to be a receptacle for every passing penis and they are responsible alone for the consequences
today’s democrats have become enemies of every thing this country stands for. Questioning the government is now racist. They don’t need that pesky Constitution and it’s separation of powers, the those silly amendments that gave us the right to bear arms or the right of free speech. They know better than those silly citizens.
November 6, 2013 at 1:39 pm |
Honestly, I do not know what happened to the Feminist movement as I knew it, and fought for, just a couple of decades ago. We wanted people to understand that women could stand on our own two feet, make our own living wage, could succeed, or fail, on our own, and we most certainly did NOT want Government interference into our lives.
Sadly, “Our Bodies, Ourselves” would not be written today. As I have mentioned before, it would be more like “Our Bodies, The Government’s Responsibility,” or something like that.
It is really astonishing to see where we are now, to see how much sexism and misogyny is expressed by WOMEN toward other women. It is sad.
And yes, good comparison to the Dems, Helen…

What bothers me is that McAuliffe won when the disaster that is Obamacare has been in the news for almost five weeks. I understand that northern VA is basically a suburb of D.C. and that most of those folks are government workers whose health care coverage is safe (so far, anyway). Were there not enough folks at risk throughout the remainder of the state that they couldn’t defeat this guy? On line, people are saying that Obamacare will bring down the Democratic Party but it didn’t in VA and in NYC.
November 6, 2013 at 4:49 pm |
Katherine, I think the attacks on Cuccinelli when it came to women hurt too, even though as Cindy posted above, the attacks were baseless. It was a very dirty campaign, and I am going to guess that MSM did not focus on McAuliffe’s dirty laundry, either. So there’s that, plus McAuliffe outspent Cuccinelli, which was a legitimate (according to Larry Sabato) complaint of the Cuccinelli campaign abt the RNC not shelling out more, or the RGA, either. They kinda screwed him.
That said, I understand he was gaining momentum since the Obamacare roll out, and some have suggested had he a week more, he would have won easily. And we can’t forget the spoiler, Starvis, who was getting some money from the Dems. He did his job, apparently.
I think once more people realize the extent of the Obamacare damage, it will indeed hurt the Dem Party. And honestly, they deserve it since it is ALL theirs…

Oh, I totally forgot this – Charles Krauthammer just mentioned it. But the shutdown apparently affected Cuccinelli’s run a LOT, especially with the NoVa people, and he had just started focusing on Obamacare the past week. Since he was the first AG to file a lawsuit, that likely went a long way, but the shutdown made it a steep hill to climb.
I also heard tonight that, ironically, Christie and Cuccinelli are not that far apart on issues. I guess since Cuccinelli has been labeled a Tea Party person, though, it is easier to heap scorn on him.
