Triple Crown Bound And Weekend Open Thread

by

It is just about that time, the running of the Belmont Stakes this Saturday. This is such an exciting time in this sport anyway, but ESPECIALLY when there is a potential Triple Crown winner. We have not had one since 1978, so it would be fantastic to have one this time around. But the Triple Crown is no walk in the park, that’s for sure, hence why we have so few of them. The lengths of the races, and the short time in between them, is what makes this such a big deal.

Oh, and get this – a friend mentioned this at Facebook, and it came up when I went to the official Belmont Stakes site. They are only charging $10 – that is TEN DOLLARS – for Grandstand admission, and $30 – THIRTY – for Clubhouse Admission. I think that is very cool indeed, especially since history may well be made this time around.

And speaking of, that the potential Triple Crown winner came from such humble beginnings makes it a heartwarming story, indeed. Here’s a nice little piece about California Chrome after he made the trip up from Maryland to Belmont Park on May 20th:

He really is engaged, isn’t he? Huh – I think Obama could take a lesson from him in that regard, couldn’t he? Just a thought…

And just for fun, here is California Chrome working out with a bit of a gallop. I like this video because it is just the horse – that’s what you hear. You hear Chrome’s hoof beats as he runs along. At the end, he gets a bath. This cracked me up since he acts very much like Jordan does when we give him a bath. Jordan isn’t crazy about water on his feet and shifts around like that. It is the funniest thing.

Here’s Chromes workout from Thursday, May 22nd:

Funny, right?

Well, it should be an exciting race regardless, but I sure do hope California Chrome can take the Crown.

I’ll be back next week. In the meantime, feel free to discuss this or whatever is happening in the world of politics these days. Consider this your Weekend Open Thread!

Yes, thanks so much for mentioning that, Foxy. It is very important indeed that we remember those from D Day…

A triple crown win will make for happiness. We all need that.

    • foxyladi14 Says:

Yippee mcnorman you are so right. 😀

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

      Yes, indeed it would!

Oh, and Zenyatta’s handsome colt, Cozmic One, has now arrived at Belmont for training (Zenyatta.com). The Zenyatta people were trying to keep it low key because they didn’t want to detract at all from the big race tomorrow. He looks so like his mother, and is tall like her, too.

But yeah, I will be flying back from Grand Cayman during the race. Cannot wait to see how Chrome does once we land and get through Customs!

    Welcome home Amy. 🙂

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Thanks, Foxy! We are in the Charlotte airport now, and will het home much later on tonight, but I am so glad we get to see the race. Yay!

Oh, ands glad Maria Sharipova won the French Open today!

        .

        • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I know, I felt the same way. He just didn’t have that next gear today…

          • kenoshamarge Says:

He ran two tough races before yesterday – the winner didn’t run in either the Kentucky Derby or the Preakness – fresher legs and better rested. Too bad though, it would have been nice to have another triple crown winner.

  6. Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I agree, Marge, it would have been nice. And yes, definitely a fresher horse. I know the owner is upset abt it, and understandably. And I know it happens a lot, that owners wait to run their horses. If the horses didn’t qualify for the other ones, though, that makes it more frustrating. One friend described it as a team sitting out the season then going in for the playoffs. I thought that was a good analogy.

But it happens, and it is legal, and that is too bad for California Chrome and us…

    • kenoshamarge Says:

I can understand the disappointment but the owner does himself and his magnificent horse no favors by calling the winners names. Looks like a sore loser.

      • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Oh, I agree – while I can certainly understand the owner’s frustration, he indeed does look like a sore loser. He could have been much more gracious, and perhaps worked behind the scenes to change the rules for other horses down the road or something…

I am very sad My Horse lost. 😦

    • kenoshamarge Says:

I’ve been around horses all my life – at one time my parents had a riding stable, but I’ve never been a fan of horse racing very much. Even watching “Nationel Velvet” when I was a kid didn’t make me a big fan. Still I have always loved the wonderful animals.

Chrome is only a 3 year old – he has many races to win and I will show more interest in the racing world because the people here cared so much. Sorry you are sad. You’ll feel better after Chrome has some rest and goes out and shows the other horses his heels once again.

      • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I can appreciate that horse racing is not everyone’s cup of tea, Marge, but I am glad you are willing to indulge those of us who do like it. And I appreciate your willingness to cheer with us! 😀

And cool that you grew up around horses and your parents had a riding stable. That is so neat! Wow! They are wonderful animals – I got to spend time with mine, and his equine buddies, just this afternoon!

Yes, Chrome can race in other races, like the Breeder’s Cup. I hope he does. That is a big one, too. It is also later in the season, so he can be rested for that, should they choose to enter him.

Can he try next year? 🙂
