It’s the Weekend, which means my “Good News” post for the week. Now, I realize that for MANY people, the news that Speaker John Boehner is giving up his position and seat at the end of October IS good news.
Well, except for Rep. Peter King, who claims the “crazies” have won now. Uh, yeah, no, and bite me.
Oops – that wasn’t very nice Weekend Good News speak. Sorry!
Ahem. But yeah, the “crazies” were very excited at the news, as this Hill article highlights:
Conservative voters roared in a standing ovation Friday at the Values Voter Summit in Washington after Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) announced Speaker John Boehner’s (R-Ohio) plans to retire.
Rubio, who is running for president, shared the news that broke just before his speech, working it into prepared remarks where he questioned why a Republican Congress isn’t “able to stop our country from sliding in the wrong direction.”
“Just a few minutes ago, Speaker Boehner announced that he will be resigning,” Rubio said to thunderous applause.
He told the crowd it is time for Republicans to “turn the page.”
“With all due respect to people who serve in government — it is important at this moment, with respect to him and the service he has provided to our country — it’s not about him, and I’m not here today to bash anyone, but the time has come to turn the page.” […] (Click here to read the rest.)
Better yet, watch for yourselves and see the reaction of the audience:
Holy moley, huh? That response says it all.
And I agree with Sen. Rubio: it is time to turn the page. And maybe now that the Speaker of the House doesn’t have connections to Stem Express (via his aide whose sister started the company), something will be done to deal with Planned Parenthood. Wouldn’t THAT be some good news?
It should be an interesting political dance to see who becomes the next Speaker of the House will be choreographed.
And speaking of dances, I want to share this truly beautiful, though bittersweet, story with you. It is the story of loss, of love, and family gained. From KOMO News:
It’s been nearly six years since Pierce County Sheriff’s Deputy Kent Mundell lost his life in the line of duty. He was responding to a domestic violence attack when he was shot. Mundell died seven days later.
His daughter got married over the weekend, and what happened at the wedding has now gone viral.
There’s no argument about it. It’s among the most important days of a woman’s life. It’s also among the proudest any parent could wish for.
As Kirsten Mundell reminisced with KOMO about her dad and the day six years ago his life was taken in the line of duty, she also talked about the difficulty of planning her wedding day: […]
Isn’t that so powerful, beautiful, loving, and heart-wrenching, all at the same time? As Mundell said:
“Any wedding is a big deal, and not having my dad there was a lot harder for all of us,” she said.
Kristen knew she had to make it special. She knew that her father had to have a seat at the wedding right there in the front row.
“It’s hard realizing it’s been almost six years and he’s not going to be there and that chair,” she said. “It’s his chair and he’s there, but he’s not. It meant a lot knowing that we were able to save a spot for him and knowing that I felt him there I knew he was there.” […] (Click here to read the rest of the story and the transcript for the video below)
I can only imagine how much it meant to her to have these fellow officers step in for her dad on this special day.
Thank heavens for the photographer, Angela Lyons, who put up some of the photos on her Facebook page (with permission). Lyons said this about trying to do her job that day. From the New York Daily News:
[…] By the time the dance was finished, four officers had stepped up to take her hand and the entire room had been reduced to tears, Lyons said.
“You can see in the pictures, (the last officer) he’s pretty much holding her up. She’s emotionally exhausted,” she said.
Their wedding photographer was too.
“My heart was so happy and so crushed at the same time,” Lyons said. “I did have to step aside. I thought, ‘This is not about me.’ I had to step behind a barn door and I had to wipe my face off. I thought, ‘Oh my gosh, this is overwhelming!'” […] (Click here to read the rest.)
But what an amazing tribute to this Deputy Sheriff whose life was taken too soon, and whose daughter had to walk down the aisle without him. No doubt, he was there in spirit, smiling down at his little girl as she takes this next major step in her life. And no doubt, he was thankful for his friends stepping in for him on this day.
This classic Anne Murray song seems an appropriate way to close this post:
This is your Weekend Open Thread.

To go along with yesterday’s posts, it seems there are some emails that have surfaced between Clinon and Gen. Petraeus. The irony, the irony: http://dailycaller.com/2015/09/25/more-emails-found-hillary-failed-to-turn-over-emails/

I am no longer allowed coffee so getting ready for the day takes longer and is distinctly less pleasant.
I love tea but it just doesn’t get me started on the day like a couple of cups of coffee did. It has a very real effect on my disposition.
September 26, 2015 at 10:58 am |
Oh, dear, Marge – that is too bad! I love, love, love coffee, and have my own cappuccino machine that gets a daily workout! I feel for you. ANd yes, as good as tea is, it ain’t the same.
But glad to have you here anyway!

Worse then Algore.
September 27, 2015 at 12:06 pm |
Yes the Pope advocating for Global Warming is, IMO, worse than Al Gore. Al Gore is just a rather discredited ex-vice-president. The Pope is supposed to speak for over a billion Catholics. Which means those of us that don’t agree are being dissed by the head of our church. I still say he could have help both the environment and the poor if he’s have stayed in the Vatican, which doesn’t allow illegal immigration, and spent the money used for his propaganda tour to help the poor. Could have bought a lot of food with what it cost for him to come here and lecture us on our shortcomings as a nation.

As I have stated many times I am NOT a Bill O’Reilly fan. But his “Talking Points Memo” the other night was something I wish more members of the media would do. He refuted the insane “Nazi” attack on Rubio by Dem crazy and DNC Head Debbie Wasserman Schultz.

When he’s right it’s only right and fair to give credit where credit is due. Otherwise I’d be acting like a liberal. Oh darn, I have to go wash my mind out with soap for saying that. 😉
September 26, 2015 at 7:21 pm |
This was in our paper today, but I noticed it actually came out the other day. Anyway, it is a Paul Greenberg piece on how much Bernie Sanders plans would cost the country. The short answer is: a BUNDLE. Here’s Greenberg: http://townhall.com/columnists/paulgreenberg/2015/09/22/a-vast-sea-of-debt-n2055075
September 27, 2015 at 7:25 am |
It’s nothing new with Dems/Progressives/Socialists, they promise the moon and never count the cost. The “poor”, which in many cases are simply the feckless, don’t care because they don’t pay for anything anyway.
September 27, 2015 at 7:47 am |
Pretty much, huh? It amazes me how people can become adults and still think they are entitled to the labors of others. It’s one thing when you are a child to have your parents/family care for you. It is quite another when you are an adult and are expected to pay your own way.
September 26, 2015 at 10:40 pm |
The other day in my “Another One Bites The Dust” post, I mentioned the Army was trying to kick out Sgt. 1st Class Charles Martland for stopping an Afghan Police Commander for raping a boy. Martland had appealed that action.
Sadly, Martland lost his appeal (h/t Facebook friend): http://townhall.com/tipsheet/katiepavlich/2015/09/23/army-to-green-beret-punished-for-defending-boy-from-an-afghan-rapist-nope-you-cant-come-back-n2055822
I don’t know how this is happening in the United States of America, but it is under this Commander in Chief…
September 27, 2015 at 7:27 am |
This is able to happen in this country because Obama has managed to politicize the upper echelons of the military. Any who want to keep their careers intact play along or find themselves with a “pink slip”. Under Obama the military has come to care more about being politically correct than about protecting this nation. Not a good sign and will not have a good outcome.
September 27, 2015 at 7:44 am |
Exactly right, Marge. He has purged around 200 top officers from the military. As you know, that is a LOT – there just aren’t that many at that level to begin with, but to “retire” a couple of hundred is HUGE: http://news.investors.com/ibd-editorials/102913-677116-197-military-officers-purged-by-obama.htm

good news
Ground Zero mosque defeated.
NYC is a great and wonderful city. some of the smartest people in the world live there. where do they get such stupid mayors?
September 27, 2015 at 8:18 am |
Good question, Helen. I think many people didn’t vote last time around, so the Dems were able to get that idiotic Socialist in.
In any event, glad the mosque idea was defeated!
September 27, 2015 at 12:09 pm |
Only 25% of New Yorkers voted and only 75% of them voted for De Blasio. So a miniscule number of New Yorkers picked their mayor. Guess the rest don’t care what happens in their city.

The chickens are coming home to roost for my sad neighbor to the south. Illinois has been a “blue” state for as long as I can remember. Maybe since Lincoln left. Whatever. Will the citizens finally wake up and quit voting for the lefties that can’t even pay them the money they win in the lottery? That should do it if nothing else can.
September 27, 2015 at 8:33 am |
You would think by now they would have gotten the clue what with the higher taxes, businesses moving out, and all of that. Maybe this will finally do it – but as long as Chicago is in IL, I am a little skeptical. 🙂
September 27, 2015 at 8:36 am |
Me too. At least the Daley “machine” was competent as well as corrupt. Since then, not as much. And Rahm seems to be a real fizzle.

It says a whole lot that Rahm was elected not once, but TWICE…
September 27, 2015 at 8:37 am |
Great article from the American Thinker. IMO.
Am I Still a Racist?
By Eileen F. Toplansky
To see the emptiness of liberal/Democrat logic, try the following at the next dinner party.
If I vote for Ben Carson, am I still guilty of being a racist, considering the way you hurled that accusation at me when I told you that Obama was a very bad choice because of his ideology and his acquaintances?
If I vote for Carly Fiorina, am I still guilty of a war on women, given that this woman has broken through the glass ceiling, overcome a deadly disease, and still come out fighting?
If you insist that the federal government fund Planned Parenthood even after the uncovering of illegal sales of aborted body parts, I am confused. Wasn’t Obamacare supposed to provide universal coverage for all Americans? Why, then, does the federal government need to continue funding Planned Parenthood?
If you vote for Bernie Sanders, will your house in Chappaqua be available for the government’s use if Sanders decides you have no right to private property anymore? As Thomas Sowell has opined, “what exactly is [the] fair share of what someone else has worked for?”
For the environmentalists who maintain that we have no right to use trees to produce paper towels for bathroom use, did you know that “dryers use electricity which produces a ‘carbon footprint’ that liberals link to global warming”?
By the way, “if 11 million illegal aliens are supposed to assist the U.S. economy, why didn’t they help the Mexican economy before they left?”

OHMYGOSH – I love this. Thanks, Marge!
Not for nothing, but as Suzy was checking her work email yesterday while we were out and abt (visiting a friend in the hospital who just had a baby – 2 months premature, going to a movie, seeing Jordan), I mentioned that it infuriates me that people think they are entitled to the fruits of Suzy’s 60 – 80 hr a week labor. She doesn’t take full weekends off. If she is lucky, she might get a solid amt of time one day to just relax. She has to miss plenty of birthdays and anniversaries traveling for work.
But that is why she gets paid what she does. If other people want money, they can damn well work 60 – 80 hrs a week, too, and stop thinking they are entitled to the fruits of other’s hard labor. It is ridiculous.
Thanks for the article. I am passing it along!
September 27, 2015 at 9:10 am |
Didn’t the “brilliant” Dr. Sowell frame that question perfectly? So much of what he says is not only quotable it is easy to understand and that most uncommon of things, common sense. He is a national treasure IMO.
September 27, 2015 at 9:11 am |
And perhaps I’m too harsh but isn’t it racist when the left ignore a great man like Thomas Sowell because he doesn’t, and hasn’t, fallen in line like a good little darkie?
September 27, 2015 at 9:31 am |
Oh, without a doubt – Sowell IS brilliant and can nail things with such succinct and eloquent questions.
It does seem just a tad (snark) racist that Sowell is not embraced more by the Left…

How Long Before Hillary Garbed in a Bathrobe Starts Wandering the Streets of Chappaqua?
Some years ago, in an effort to avoid prosecution, Mafia boss Vincent “Vinnie the Chin” Gigante donned a bathrobe and wandered the streets of Little Italy and Greenwich Village posing as a demented old man. I wonder if Hillary Clinton is getting fitted for just such a bathrobe and starts wandering the lanes of Chappaqua in Westchester to avoid prosecution herself.

I pay not attention to people who feel the need to dress up like a birth control “compact” and shout and drown out others. They have a right to do it, I just don’t think that it’s “right” to do it. And that does for protesters from both parties.
September 27, 2015 at 12:13 pm |
I might add that IMHO the idiots from Code Pink have a right to chant their propaganda but anyone with a brain has a right to ignore the tiresome twits.

Just read where Boehner went on anti-Republican morning show “Meet The Press” and dissed Ted Cruz and other conservatives. Why am I not surprised. What a POS! He had a chance to let go gracefully, he chose not to do so. Tells me all I need to know about the character of the man.
September 27, 2015 at 3:02 pm |
Oh, good grief. Here he declares, after saying his prayers, according to him, and then he goes and casts aspersions against members of his party on his way out? WTH? Yes, he could have, and SHOULD have, left with some dignity and grace. Putz.
September 27, 2015 at 3:14 pm |
Carly Fiorina is just fantastic in this interview with the unbelievably arrogant, condescending, and patronizing Chuck Todd:
September 27, 2015 at 4:30 pm |
She refused to let him ride rough shod over her. And didn’t you love it when he quoted the Washington Post and she talked about how they had lied about her and so had no credibility? She’s fantastic.
September 27, 2015 at 4:37 pm |
Wasn’t she? Oh, I loved it when she took on WaPo and them acting like they know more abt HER work history than SHE does. Seriously?! Wow, that is some major league hubris right there. Glad she called them on it!
And honest-to-pete – this focus on whether or not that is the EXACT fetus abt which Fiorina is speaking rather than focus on this BARBARIC practice is the Left’s way of dealing with these things. Talk abt missing the forest for the trees…
September 27, 2015 at 4:44 pm |
Oh – and Todd’s acting as if she couldn’t get another job as CEO after HP was just insulting as HELL. What a SCHMUCK he is.

Bad news about Grandpa
An elderly man had a massive stroke and his family drove him to the emergency room.
